A good mid 19th century brass-strung mahogany two day marine chronometer John Poole, 57 Fenchurch Street, London, No.4033 The three-part case with brass banding and vacant cartouche to the top lid (velvet lined to the interior), the mid-section with mother of pearl plaque reading 'J.Lynn Leuchars', over recessed campaign style handles to the sides. The 4 inch silvered Roman dial with minute track framing the subsidiaries for power reserve (marked in 6 hour increments with instruction to wind at 24 hours), and running seconds overlapping the VI, with gold hands, signed John Poole, MAKER TO THE ADMIRALTY, 57 Fenchurch St, London, 4033. The chain fusee movement with spotted plates and good blued steel screws, the free sprung blued steel helical spring with diamond endstone in a double screwed chaton with cut and compensated bimetallic balance, the Earnshaw type detent escapement with maintaining power, the whole suspended in the numbered gimballed bowl with locking lever, together with a later safety winding key and a case key. The case 18cms (7ins) wide. Footnotes: The case mid-section applied with a trade label for 'Geo. E. Butler...Chronometer and Watchmaker...310 California St. San Francisco'. Accompanied by a photograph of a clockmaker at the bench (Butler?). John Poole was born in 1818 and is recorded as working at 57 Fenchurch Street, London from circa 1845 until 1875.
