An interesting early 20th century re-cased mahogany two day marine chronometer with Service History Victor Kullberg, 105 Liverpool Road, London No.9015.Sold to the Admiralty 2 July 1916. The (later) three part mahogany case with brass signature plaque and recessed campaign style handles. The 4 inch silvered Roman dial with minute track framing the power reserve dial (marked in 8 hour increments 0-56 with instruction to wind at 24 hours) and the Arabic subsidiary seconds dial, with good blued steel hands, suspended in a numbered brass bowl in lockable gimbals, signed across the centre VICTOR KULLBERG Maker to the Admiralty, THE INDIAN & ITALIAN GOVERNMENTS, 105 Liverpool Rd. London, N and within the seconds dial TEN GOLD MEDALS AWARDED DIPLOMA OF HONOR SOLE & HIGHEST AWARD VIENNA , along with the number and Admiralty Arrow. The movement with spotted plates, reverse chain fusee, maintaining power to the jewelled train terminating in an Earnshaw type detent escapement with cut and compensated Kullberg balance, helical palladium hairspring, and diamond endstone in a double-screwed chaton. 19cms (7 inches) high Footnotes: The underside of the bowl is marked H.S.1.^. Sold together with two photocopied pages from the Ledgers of the Royal Observatory, Greenwich giving details of the history of this chronometer aboard HMS Heather between July 1916 and September 1934. Victor Kullberg (1824–1890), a celebrated chronometer maker from Visby, Gotland, trained under Victor Soderburg in Sweden before moving to London in 1851. He gained international recognition for his chronometers, winning numerous awards, including first place at Greenwich Observatory in 1864 with his innovative 'flat rim' balance. Kullberg also contributed significant advancements in watchmaking, supplying over 500 chronometers to the Royal Navy. After his death, his firm was taken over by George and Peter Wennerstrom, later managed by Sanfrid Lundquist, who continued to operate under Kullberg's name until 1947.
