Covers detached, title page loose, heavily worn and chipped, dampstaining, some insect damage to edges, ink notations on title page, browning and spotting. Provenance: Jules Mossy (ink inscription to title page, upper cover); relevant marginal annotations throughout in English and in French. FIRST EDITION. Prior to the Louisiana Purchase, the territory was governed by the precedents set by French and Spanish law. Once the territory of Louisiana became a U.S. possession, the prevailing laws were incorporated into the laws of many of the states that would emerge from the vast area of land - six U.S. states in their entirety, and portions of 9 other states.
