The Laws of Las Siete Partidas which are still in force in the State of Louisiana. New Orleans: M'Karaher, 1820. 2 volumes. 8vo (220 x 138 mm). Contemporary sheep, red morocco lettering pieces on spine. Joints cracked, upper covers detached, browning and foxing throughout. Provenance: Henry S. Johnson (United States Senator, presentation 'From the translators'); 'Buchanan 1833' ink inscription to title in volume 2. PRESENTATION TO EARLY LOUISIANA SENATOR AND THEN GOVERNOR HENRY S. JOHNSON, 'FROM THE TRANSLATORS.' An important collection of the laws of Spain and the Spanish colonies in America, which were also in force in the territory of Louisiana. An earlier 1808 publication of Spanish laws governing the territory was considered incomplete and vague, creating the necessity for a more detailed work on the application of laws in specific situations. This work rectified that situation, offering an English edition of the complete body of Spanish law. The recipient Henry S. Johnson was appointed to the U.S. Senate in 1818, and then elected Governor in 1824.
