FERDINAND AND ISABELLA PRIVILEGE FOR FERDINAND'S VASSAL AND BODYGUARD. FERDINAND II, KING OF ARAGON. 1452-1516 Document Signed ('Yo el rey'), a privilege for his bodyguard Sancho Sanchez of Avila 330 x 240 mm. 4 vellum leaves (collation: i4). 45 long lines, faintly ruled in lead (written area: 215 x 150 mm). Copied in a round Spanish script. F. 1r with a Flemish-style border at top and inner margin, consisting of flowers, fruits, birds and acanthus scrolls on an ochre ground, one 11-line decorated initial on a burnished metallic ground, one 4-line metallic initial on blue and mauve ground, first line of text consists of similar metallic initials on blue and mauve grounds. Occasional minor corrections to text or in margins; notarial attestations on f. 4r. Stitched into a parchment wrapper using a twisted silk cord made of strands of blue, yellow, green, red, and pink. The same cord attaches a lead seal (ca. 80 mm in diameter) depicting Ferdinand on horseback on one side and Isabella enthroned holding a scepter on the other. (A few stains to margins, the text block formerly folded into quarters, slight rubbing of ink in the lines where the folds occurred, some wear to cord and the lead seal somewhat oxidized; in a modern folding case.) The document, issued by Ferdinand in his name as king and that of Queen Isabella, grants to Sancho Sanchez of Avila, resident in Villa Nueva, the privilege of participating as a merchant, buying and selling, in the weekly market of that city. The document identifies the recipient as Ferdinand's vassal and bodyguard.
