A STAINLESS STEEL MANUAL WIND CHRONOGRAPH BRACELET WATCH Model: Cosmograph Daytona 'Paul Newman' Reference: 6239 Date: c. 1969 Movement: 17-jewel manual wind Dial: Cream Case: Tonneau form, screw down back, No. 1091058 Strap/Bracelet: Stainless steel Oyster link Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel clasp Signed: Case, dial, movement and clasp Size: 37mm Accompaniments: None Footnotes: The Rolex Daytona, a watch synonymous with auto racing, had its roots planted in the chronographs of the 1950s, and came to be the icon it is today through the iterations since the 1960s. The present lot bears an exotic, or 'Paul Newman' dial, originally introduced on the Ref. 6239 in the mid-1960s and itself having multiple iterations, or coloring, over the years. This 6239 comes from an early run of the Reference and is paired with a two-color Paul Newman dial. While this watch's case and movement are from an early 6239, the lot is being offered with the dial from the late '60s, and was likely paired in a service or restoration. That being established, the dial bears all the hallmarks one looks for in these examples, with crisp stylized lettering, softly aged patina and lume plots, and the all important Singer manufacturer's signature to the reverse. This example provides an opportunity to acquire a stunning dial in an iconic Reference and model.
