A STAINLESS STEEL AUTOMATIC TRIPLE CALENDAR CHRONOGRAPH WRISTWATCH WITH MOON PHASE Model: Padellone Reference: 8171 Date: c. 1950s Movement: Jeweled automatic, No. 67128 / G4768 Dial: Two-toned silvered Case: Round, snap on case back, No. 820658 Strap/Bracelet: Black leather Buckle/Clasp: Stainless steel buckle Signed: Case, dial, movement and buckle Size: 38mm Accompaniments: None Footnotes: The Reference 8171 is a rare and highly coveted vintage Rolex model, renowned for its triple calendar and moonphase complication. Introduced in the early 1950s, this timepiece stands out for its oversized 38mm case— a substantial size for its era. The 8171 features a combination of a triple calendar (day, date, and month) and a moonphase indicator, a complication Rolex only produced in two references up until the past decade. Its size has earned it the affectionate nickname 'Padellone', meaning 'frying pan', among Italian collectors. Most examples of this model were made in either stainless steel or yellow gold, with steel models being even rarer. The present lot is a well survived example with a subtle two-tone dial and visible engravings to the case back, while most examples lack any evidence of the serial number and coronet to the rear.
