AN INSCRIBED COLT MODEL 1862 POLICE REVOLVER, 1861. Serial number 2028, .36 caliber round barrel with single line address reading 'ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA,' left side of frame marked 'COLTS/PATENT,' fluted cylinder with patent markings, brass trigger guard and grip frame, the back engraved 'James Franklin. 1861.,' all serial numbers match except the wedge. Barrel lg. 4 1/2, overall lg. 9 1/2 in. Condition: Steel toned to mottled gray with light pitting, wedge is a later replacement, trigger guard has a trace of silvering, grip has a repaired crack on each side where it meets the frame; action functions properly. Footnotes: Note James H. Franklin was born in 1833 and enlisted in New York City as a private in Company F of the 5th New York Infantry (Duryea's Zouaves) October 19, 1861, for the term of three years. He was wounded at Manassas on October 30, 1862. He transferred to Company A of the 146th New York State Volunteers on May 9, 1863, and served at the Siege of Yorktown, Bull Run, and Gaines Mill. He was wounded at Bull Run and discharged on October 19, 1864. Franklin died in Jersey City, New Jersey, October 22, 1923. Lot includes a carte-de-visite photograph of James Franklin, a cabinet card family photograph and a binder of information related to Franklin's Civil War service.
