AN INSCRIBED COLT MODEL 1862 POLICE REVOLVER AND HOLSTER, 1862. Serial number 12377, .36 caliber round barrel marked on the top with singe-line address reading 'ADDRESS COL SAML COLT NEW-YORK U.S.AMERICA.,' the left side of the frame marked 'COLTS/PATENT,' fluted cylinder with patent markings, silvered brass trigger guard and grip frame marked on the left side '36 CAL' and engraved on the back 'Capt. J.C. White.,' walnut grip, all serial numbers match including the wedge; and black leather holster. Barrel lg. 6 1/2 overall lg. 11 1/2 in. Condition: Steel toned to mottled light gray, markings are clear, trigger guard and grip frame retain approx. 10% silvering, grip has scratches and wear, action functions properly; holster has alligatored surface and a hole on the back near the muzzle. Footnotes: Note John Chester White (1841-1921) enlisted as a private in Company A of the 17th Pennsylvania Infantry April 18, 1861. He served as adjutant in the 180th Pennsylvania Volunteers (19th Cavalry) November 23, 1862-February 21, 1863. From May 8, 1863, to June 10, 1864, White served in Company B of the 1st Battalion, 11th U.S. Infantry as a private, corporal and sergeant. He was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant in the 10th U.S. Infantry on June 10, 1864. White was promoted to 1st Lieutenant June 18, 1864, for gallantry and meritorious service at Petersburg, Virginia, and then promoted to captain on August 19, 1864, as a result of his service at the Battle of Weldon Railroad near Petersburg. After the Civil War John White was assigned to the 1st Artillery in 1871. He retired from military service as a major April 23, 1904, and died in Boston, Massachusetts, January 17, 1921.
