A PROTOTYPE MANHATTAN POCKET MODEL, SERIES I REVOLVER, c. 1858. No serial number on the barrel or wedge, inside of the grip frame marked '962.' .31 caliber unmarked octagonal barrel; five-shot cylinder with roller engraved stagecoach holdup scene; frame without engraving, smooth walnut grips. Barrel lg. 6, overall lg. 10 ¾ in. Condition: Barrel and frame are toned to brown, cylinder toned to gray and with strong scene, grips have minor dings and dents, action functions roughly. Footnotes: Provenance The Miles W. Standish Collection. Note Nutter states that this revolver is the only known prototype of Manhattan's first model of revolver. He notes several characteristics of this revolver that differ from the production models including 1. a filed notch in the cylinder to align the scene with the hammer; 2. different style hammer spring; 3. only one barrel fitting pin instead of two where the barrel joins the frame; 4. heavier loading lever catch at the muzzle; 5. loading lever constructed with an additional linkage to allow for smoother operation of the lever; 6. grip screw enters from the right side instead of left as on the production models (Waldo E. Nutter, Manhattan Firearms, (Harrisburg: The Stackpole Company, 1958), p. 36, 86-87, plates 5 & 6).
