AN ENGLISH FLINTLOCK COACHING BLUNDERBUSS, probably by James Barbar I, London, third quarter of the 18th century. 18 1/4 in. barrel with flaring muzzle and ring decoration at the breech, the left side with London Company of Gunmakers proof marks and barrel maker's mark '*/IB'; convex lock plate with pointed tail and gravity catch on the cock, engraved 'BARBAR' below the pan; walnut stock with carved plateau around the breech plug tang and rear of the lock mortice and side plate; brass furniture including a butt plate with stepped and pointed tail, Land Pattern-style thumb piece, trigger guard with pointed finial, openwork side plate, single sheet brass rammer pipe, sling swivels with partial old sling, wooden rammer with horn tip and iron jag ferule at the end. Overall lg. 33 1/4 in. Condition: Barrel is toned to mottled brown and has overall light pitting, lock toned to dark brown, stock has a minor crack along the right side of the barrel channel along with scattered dings and dents, brass furniture toned to deep yellow, action functions properly.
