Silver Hilted Hanger, Likely John Ward Gilman, Exeter, New Hampshire, third quarter of the 18th century. Silver hilt with openwork counter guard decorated with fine wrigglework engraving, double silver chain connecting to a silver lion's head pommel, spiraling and brown leather covered grip with silver ribbon wrapping; curved single-edge blade with false edge at the tip and single narrow fuller, both sides of the blade marked '1747' and with a chiseled running fox motif; leather scabbard with tooled decoration, silver tip an upper mounts, steel chatelain and suspension chain. Blade lg. 25, overall lg. 30 3/4 in. Condition: Silver toned to gray, outboard edge of the counter-guard has a break, leather grip wrapping is good, silver ribbon mostly tight; blade is mostly bright with scattered areas of gray toning, scattered shallow nicks along blade edge; scabbard is in generally good overall condition with some wear and surface loss.
