Large Armorial Porcelain Plate with the Arms of Hodges, Jingdezhen, China, c. 1745. Wide rim enamel-painted with three varieties of floral sprigs, including chrysanthemums and lilies, the cavetto decorated with gilt flower and scroll motifs inside a scalloped border, encircling shallow well centering a mantled shield bearing the arms of HODGES, Or three crescents sable, on a canton of the second ducal coronet of the first, below the crest, On a ducal coronet or a crescent sable, entwined at bottom with a banner inscribed, 'Utilis ab ortu' (Useful from the beginning), diam. 11 1/2, ht. 1 1/8 in.
