A GROUP OF FOUR LACQUER KŌGŌ (INCENSE CONTAINERS) Muromachi (1336-1573) and Edo period (1615-1868), 16th and 19th century Comprising an early rectangular box with rounded corners decorated in gold, red, and black takamaki-e and overlays of pewter and gold foil with minogame (mythical tortoises) against a ground of nashiji, the interior decorated with pumpkins and leafy vines, the rims pewter; A hexagonal box with rounded edges decorated with courtiers and an attendant by a waterfall in gold, silver, red, and black takamaki-e and hiramaki-e with highlights of iridescent shell and kirikane, the interior with butterflies in iro-e togidashi maki-e on a ground of black lacquer sprinkled with hirame; A circular box decorated with a mythical palace in swirling clouds in gold, silver, black, and red togidashi maki-e and mura-nashiji, the interior nashiji, the rims silver; A box in the form of Hotei's treasure sack and fan in gold hiramaki-e, takamaki-e, and kinji on a ground of nashiji 3 7/8in (9.8cm) wide, the largest (4).
