A GROUP OF FIVE LACQUER BOXES Edo period (1615-1868) or Meiji era (1868-1912), 19th/20th century Comprising a circular kōgō with domed inrōbuta (flush-fitting) lid decorated with a spray of peonies and grasses in gold and silver takamaki-e and hiramaki-e on a kinji ground, the interior and underside nashiji; A circular kōgō with a flat lid decorated with pomegranates, grapes and nanten (nandina) berries in gold takamaki-e and inlays of iridescent shell and lacquer on a ground of simulated pewter, the sides, interior and base dense nashiji, the rims pewter; A rectangular kōgō with a slightly domed inrōbuta lid decorated with a fan-shaped reserve containing river boats beneath a willow tree and a flying crane in gold takamaki-e, hiramaki-e, togidashi maki-e, kirikane, and inlays of colored stones against a ground of nashiji, the interior nashiji, with pewter rims; A miniature rectangular box with a kabusebuta (overhanging) lid decorated with Tokugawa family crests and scrolling floral vines in hiramkai-e against a roiro-nuri ground, the interior fitted with six miniature boxes decorated with bird and flower motifs in gold hiramaki-e; A miniature fubako (letter box) with a kabusebuta lid with scalloped cutaways decorated with family crests in gold hiramaki-e on a nashiji ground 3in (7.67cm) diameter, the largest (5).
