Three Framed Needlepoint Samplers, America, late 18th/early 19th century. Assembled group of vertically-oriented samplers, the two longer panels include one signed by Judith Chase and dated 1777, wrought in broderie anglaise, cross-stitch, and Queen's stitch on a plain-weave ground, the bottom margin retaining lustrous silk details and unfinished block pattern; the other signed 'Ann B. Dwight / Aged 7 1820' on a loosely woven linen ground; the smaller sampler signed Martha Farnum, 'who was born February the 20th 1790', all mounted in glazed frames, largest sight, 8 1/8 x 17 1/8 in. Footnotes: Provenance A North Smithfield, Rhode Island, Estate. Judith Chase Hoyt was born 13 February 1769 in Amesbury, Massachusetts. Martha Farnum (1790/1-1881) was a resident of Smithfield, Rhode Island.
