Framed 'Prepare to meet thy God' Needlepoint Picture, signed Rachel Howe, 1833. Fine plain-weave canvas worked predominantly in cross-stitched wool and linen threads retaining vibrant pink, fuchsia, and peach hues, symmetrical composition framed by square floral trellis border flanking a landscaped ground with a shepherd, rabbits, cows, birds, and an owl surrounding a red house with picket-fenced yard, flocks of birds, butterflies, and floral arrangements filling top of panel, surrounding a centered block of text inscribed with the hymn verse, 'Teach me O Lord thy name to fear, / Spread an alarm abroad. / And cry in every careless ear, / Prepare to meet thy God. / Rachel Howe's Work, 1833.', the verse from a hymn widely published for use in Sunday school throughout the nineteenth century, laid over white backing and mounted in mahogany-veneered, gilt-lined glazed frame, sight, 16 3/4 x 16 3/8 in.
