European School, c. 1790, Dignitary of the Order of St. John Subject stands at an angle with face depicted in three-quarter profile, he wears a bright red and gold coat over white vest, a white and gold medal of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta hanging from black ribbon around his neck, the Maltese cross recurring on buttons and bicorn hat, carrying gilded walking stick in ringed right hand and a sword at his left side, a folded letter on desk in right corner with Italian inscription, the dun-colored ground filled at upper right with a quartered coat of arms over elaborate naval trophies.
