Portrait of Midshipman Mark Hale, Vermont, dated 1827. Inscribed 'Presented to Harry Hale Esq. by his son Mark Hale Midshipman of the United States Navy / Has come to Vermont to get his freedom [su]it / Aug 20th 1827, the 21 Anniversary of his life' in pencil on reverse. Oil on panel wd. 19 7/8 x ht. 23 3/4 in. Footnotes: Provenance Found in Salem, Massachusetts. Mark Hale was born 20 August 1806 in Windsor, Vermont, to Harry (1780-1861) and Phebe Adams Hale (1779-1815). He was a Midshipman in the U.S. Navy from 1825-32, serving aboard the U.S.S. Falmouth and U.S. Frigate Hudson. The elder Hale, son of Revolutionary War Col. Nathan Hale (1743-80), served three terms as Representative in the Vermont State Legislature and a founding member of the Congregational Church in Chelsea.
