'Philene' Needlepoint Sampler, America, mid-19th century. Linen canvas worked in cross stitch with two registers of alphabet above one row with faded inscription, the center signed 'PHILENE : T' above the axiom 'Virtue is our guiding star to true reason' wrought over two lines, the bottom margin depicting tree motif inside serrated border, incomplete filling with contrasting ground color, in glazed frame.
