Diameter of saucer: 5 5/8 in (14.2 cm) Height of teacup: 2 3/8 in (6 cm) Provenance: Sold Sotheby's Parke Bernet, New York, November 17, 1973, lot 777; sold Butterfield & Butterfield Fine American Furniture & Decorative Arts, San Francisco, November 4, 1992, lot 74. Millard Fillmore ascended to the Presidency after the death of Zachary Taylor, and his first Presidential challenge was to oversee the Compromise of 1850. The Fillmores were a modest couple, having come from poverty, and this relatively modest china pattern reflects their simple, frugal tastes.
