A MILLARD FILLMORE SILVER CARD CASE, A CHRISTMAS GIFT FROM HIS WIFE. A English bright cut silver card case, by Alfred Taylor, Birmingham, 1857, with gilt washed interior and applied foliate rim. Engraved: 'C.C.F. / to / Millard Fillmore / Dec. 25th 1861.' H: 3 1/8 in (18 cm); W: 2 1/8 in 0(5.8 cm; D: 1 1/16 in (3.8 cm). Millard Fillmore's first wife Abigail (1798-1853) died from pneumonia during Fillmore's administration. Some years later he met Caroline C. McIntosh (1813-1881), the widow of New York merchant and railroad executive Ezekial McIntosh, who died at the age of 49 leaving Caroline wealthy and well-connected. When Fillmore proposed, Caroline insisted that he sign a pre-nuptial agreement leaving control of her fortune in her hands. They were apparently quite happy in the 16 years they spent together before Fillmore's death, as this elegant Christmas gift by the popular Birmingham silversmith Alfred Taylor suggests.
