A JOHN QUINCY ADAMS LUNCHEON PLATE. A gilt-highlighted and hand-painted porcelain luncheon plate. No marks. Dia: 9 ¼ in (23.5 cm) Provenance: sold Butterfields San Francisco, European & American Furniture and Decorative Arts, June 3, 2001, lot 9652. In the 2001 auction, this piece was described as a 'Paris painted porcelain plate from the John Quincy Adams Presidential service' that was used in state dinner service during Adams' administration. Samples of this service appear in Marie Klamkin's book White House China (New York: 1972) but it is identified as German Meissen instead of Paris porcelain. According to notes in the Gerald Ford Library, Adams purchased this pink, white and gold dinner set from Paris when he was minister to Russia from 1809-1814. The frugal Adams would have made the most use of such an extravagant purchase by continuing to use it more than 10 years later during his Presidential administration. A plate from this service is in the White House collection and other pieces are in the Smithsonian Collection.
