A JAMES MONROE PRESIDENTIAL SERVICE SOUP BOWL. A porcelain soup bowl with gilt rim, gilt monogram 'M' in shield on border, and hand painted federal eagle surrounded by 20 stars at center. No marks. Dia: 9.5 in (24 cm) Provenance: Heritage Auctions, Political & Americana, December 22-3, 2008, lot 47008. This pattern is referred to as President Monroe's 'other' china. The more common example features an eagle with wings spread surrounded by a crimson red border featuring five vignettes representing Strength, the Arts, Commerce, the Sciences and Agriculture. Our example, a more subdued pattern with the eagle surrounded by 20 stars and the monogram 'M,' was also used by the Monroes, both at the temporary housing at 2017 I Street (where they lived while the war damages to the White House were repaired) and the White House itself.
