A JOHN QUINCY ADAMS PRESENTATION COPY OF HIS ORATION ON THE DEATH OF LAFAYETTE. ADAMS, JOHN QUINCY. 1767-1848. Oration on the Character of Gilbert Motier de Lafayette Delivered ... On the 31st December, 1834. Washington: Gales and Seaton, 1835. 8vo. Green polished calf decorated in gilt. Very minor spotting to leaves and edges, front hinge cracked, minor wear to head and tail of spine. FIRST EDITION, PRESENTATION COPY, with presentation leaf from John Quincy Adams to John Reed tipped at left margin to title page. The Marquis de Lafayette enjoyed a long and close relationship with the Adams family. The elder Adams was one of the first people the Marquis visited at the beginning of his celebrated return tour of America in 1824-1825. At the conclusion of his travels, Lafayette visited the younger Quincy Adams, newly installed as the 6th President, at the White House. When Lafayette died 10 years later, Quincy Adams, who was then serving in the U.S. House of Representatives, was the natural choice to deliver a eulogy for the Revolutionary War hero. John Reed, Jr. (1781-1860) was a Congressman from Massachusetts representing, at various times in his career, the Federalist, the Anti-Masonic, and the Whig parties.
