modelled by Johann Joachim Kändler and Peter Reinicke, holding a flask in his left hand, a monkey to his left, tethered to his waist and seated on an open medicine chest next to a book and several flasks, the base moulded with gilt-edged scrollwork and applied with leaves, crossed swords in underglaze-blue to rear of base, impressed numeral 14

Height 6 1/4 in.

15.9 cm.

Literature
Horst Reber, Eine Rheinische Porzellan-Sammlung, Darmstadt, 2006, vol. I, p. 176

Catalogue note
This figure with a monkey at his feet is modelled after the engraving entitled ‘Mounta Banck - Le Charlatan - Il Charlatano’, after a drawing by Marcellus Laroon the Elder, from the series 'The Cryes of the City of London Drawne after the Life’, first published in full in 1688 by Pierce Tempest, and republished in 1711 by Henry Overton, London. The series depicts itinerant dealers and other remarkable characters who frequented London’s streets at that time. See Hans Syz et al., Catalogue of the Hans Syz Collection, Washington D.C., 1979, pp. 446-447, no. 294 for an illustration of this model and list of other known examples.

Cranfield University used non-invasive X-ray fluorescence (XRF) for this lot to screen the green enamel for chromium, which was not detected, a result consistent with 18th century manufacture.
