modelled by Peter Reinicke, after a drawing by Christophe Huet, standing, with a baby in a cradle held by a strap across her right shoulder, on a gilt scroll-moulded base applied with flowers and foliage, crossed swords mark in underglaze-blue to rear of base, impressed numeral 26

Height 5 1/2 in.

14 cm.

Literature

Catalogue note
The Meissen ‘Cris de Paris’ series represents a realistic depiction of the people, costumes, gestures and expressions of eighteenth-century Paris. The ‘criers’ include street vendors, tradesmen, performers and musicians, as well as dandies and courtesans. They were modelled by Reinicke and overseen by Kändler, after a series of watercolour drawings produced in 1753 by Christophe Huet, whose pen and wash drawings still survive, annotated in German and French. Work began in 1753-4 and with thirty-four figures, it became one of the most extensive series made at the Meissen manufactory.

The present lot is based on Huet’s drawing, inscribed: ‘No 26 Ch (ß) eine Savoyardin mit ihrem Kind in inem Berdeau von Holz - Savoyarde demandant L'àumone’ […a Savoyard woman with her child in a wooden cradle – asking for alms…]; see Martin Eberle, Cris de Paris, Meissener Porzellanfiguren des 18. Jahrhunderts, Leipzig, 2001, no. 38, for the drawing and an illustration of a similar model.

Huet’s drawing may in turn have been inspired by a 1739 engraving by Jacques Dumont, called Le Romain, finished by Jean Daullé, depicting a Savoyarde woman with a cradle, holding the hand of a child. As well as the stand alone figure, Meissen also created a group with the child, which is closely related to this engraving. An example of the engraving is in the Art Institute of Chicago (museum no. 2013.526).
