MEDICINE IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR. JONES, JOHN. 1729-1791. Plain Concise Practical Remarks on the Treatment of Wounds and Fractures. BOUND WITH: SWIETEN, GERARD VAN. 1700-1772. The Diseases Incident to Armies. With the Method of Cure.... Philadelphia: Robert Bell, 1776. 2 works bound in 1. 8vo (197 x 120 mm). Contemporary sheep, spine in six compartments ruled in gilt, titled V. & J.. Wear to extremities with slight chipping to joints at ends, corners a bit bumped, browning and some light marginal dampstaining. Provenance: Joseph W. Campbell (New Jersey physician, c. 1801-1886, ink ownership signature on front free endpaper dated 1821); Charles Monford (ink ownership inscription on first title). THE FIRST AMERICAN FIELD MANUAL, AND THE FIRST SURGICAL WORK BY AN AMERICAN. John Jones's Plain Concise Practical Remarks on the Treatment of Wounds and Fractures, was the first newly authored guide for field surgeons in the Continental Army, and thus the first American manual of military surgery. In it, he expresses the hope that 'if any of you, by observing the following rules, should save the life, or even limb of but one citizen, who has bravely exposed himself in defence of his country, I shall think myself richly rewarded for my labour.' The first edition appeared in 1775, and this a year later as the revolution progressed. Jones's work is commonly found bound (as here) immediately following the first American edition of this English translation of van Swieten's work, originally published in German in 1759. Van Swieten's work is appended here with John Ranby's The Nature and Treatment of Gun-shot Wounds, and William Northcote's Extracts from the Marine Practice of Physic and Surgery, with Some Brief Directions to be Observed by Sea Surgeons (with its own title page). Van Swieten was the personal physician to Empress Maria Theresa of Austria, a disciplined man of science who campaigned against the spread of superstition among the uneducated. In particular, he was tasked by the Empress to stop the spread of belief in vampires from the Carpathian regions into the heart of the Empire. Austin 1843 and 1085; Evans 15100 and 14814; Guerra A597 and A583; Sabin 94063 and 36524 (for Holt 1775 edition).
