REVOLUTIONARY WAR PRIVATEERING COMMISSION. HANCOCK, JOHN. 1737-1793. Document Signed ('John Hancock'), partially printed and accomplished in manuscript, being a privateering commission for Matthew Ritch and the Schooner Liberty, 205 x 333 mm, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, February 2, 1778, the word 'COLONIES' in type lined out in ink, and corrected to 'STATES,' countersigned by Abraham Livingston, Commissary to the Continental Army in Charleston, South Carolina, at lower left: ''Attest. / Charles Town 12th Feb: / 1778 / Abrm Livingston,' old folds, some staining, framed. Provenance: Property from a Mid-Atlantic Estate. RARE HANCOCK SIGNED LETTER OF MARQUE ALLOWING 'THE LIBERTY' TO CAPTURE BRITISH SHIPS AND CARGO. By Act of the Continental Congress on April 3, 1776, John Hancock and the congress began authorizing privateers to harass British ships and take prizes. Lacking a vital navy, and facing the most powerful navy in the world, the American congress commissioned nearly 800 vessels, which would capture roughly 600 ships throughout the war, an important contribution to the American effort. This early commission has the word 'colonies' in print three times, and in each case with a holograph correction to read 'States.' 'IN CONGRESS. / The DELEGATES of the UNITED COLONIES States of New-Hampshire, Massachusetts-Bay, Rhode-Island, Connecticut, New-York, New-Jersey, Pennsylvania, the Counties of New-Castle, Kent and Sussex on Delaware; Maryland, Virginia, North-Carolina, South-Carolina, and Georgia, TO All unto whom these Presents shall come, send GREETING: KNOW YE, / THAT we have granted, and by these Presents do grant Licence and Authority to Matthew Ritch Mariner, Commander of the Schooner called The Liberty of the Burthen of forty five Tons, or thereabouts, belonging to the United States of America in the Colony of mounting Four Carriage Guns, and navigated by Eight Men, to fit out and set forth the said Schooner in a warlike Manner, and by and with the said Schooner and the Crew thereof, by Force of Arms, to attack, seize, and take the Ships and other Vessels belonging to the Inhabitants of Great-Britain, or any of them, with their Tackle, Apparel, Furniture and Ladings, on the High Seas, or between high-water and low-water Marks, and to bring the same to some convenient Ports in the said Colonies States in Order that the Courts, which are or shall be there appointed to hear and determine the Causes civil and maritime, may proceed in due Form to condemn the said Captures, if they be adjudged lawful Prize; the said Ritch having given Bond, with sufficient Sureties, that Nothing be done by the said Ritch or any of the Officers, Mariners or Company thereof contrary to, or inconsistent with the Usages and Customs of Nations, and the Instructions, a Copy of which is herewith delivered to him. And we will and require all our Officers whatsoever to give Succor and Assistance to the said Ritch in the Premises. This Commission shall continue in Force until the Congress shall issue Orders to the Contrary. / By Order of the Congress, / John Hancock PRESIDENT. / Dated at Phild.a 2d Feby. 1778' For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
