A good mid 17th century German square gilt and engraved brass horizontal table clock Hans Rossbach, Hamburg the 4.5 inch square dial with finely engraved flowerheads to each corner, the silvered Roman chapter ring with arrow-head half hour marks framing the five flowerheads to the centre issuing from a central bud at VI, with single blued steel hand. The sides plain, but framed by a moulded edge on turned feet. The movement with square plates filling the case, united by Egyptian pillars, the going train with chain fusee to a verge escapement and later balance wheel set in a finely engraved and pierced balance cock, the strike train with spring barrel and small countwheel set on the backplate (it's centre pierced with foliage and flowers on a blued steel ground) striking against a bell mounted on a bridge cock to the underside, signed Hans Rossbach Hamburg 12cms (4.75ins) wide. Footnotes: Hans Rossbach was active in the second half of the 17th century, he worked in Hamburg from around 1674. He is mentioned in Jürgen Abeler's, Meister der Uhrmacherkunst, page 468. A coach watch by Rossbach resides in the National Museum of Copenhagen. The dial engraving of the current lot is reminiscent of the best of the early Golden Age clocks by the likes of Fromanteel, East, Tompion and Knibb.
