1979 BMW 797cc R80/7 Registration no. YYE 217T Frame no. 6027712 R80/7 Engine no. 6027712 BMW's first 'R80' (nominally 800cc) model was the R80/7 introduced in 1977 as replacement for the 750cc R75/7. Like its predecessor, the R80/7 was powered by BMW's traditional air-cooled flat-twin engine coupled to low-maintenance shaft final drive transmission. Engineered to BMW's customarily high standards, the R80/7 was far from cheap and at £1,999 (in 1978) cost around 40% more than Yamaha's similarly shaft-driven XS750 tourer. 'BMW have built their reputation almost solely on the touring virtues of their flat twins, so it was a pleasant reminder when I rode the R80 that a balance of performance and ride properties can produce a versatility based on excellent rather than average capability in every department.' - Bike magazine, July 1980. Part of a recent barn-find discovery, this BMW R80/7 was first registered on 1st February 1979 and has 91,337 miles showing on the odometer. Our private vendor acquired the BMW in June 1996 from a Potters Bar-based owner. Last taxed in 2003, the machine has had seven previous owners according to the DVLA database and was previously orange/black (per HPI). It last ran approximately 15 years ago and its mechanical condition is not known. Offered for recommissioning and/or restoration and sold strictly as viewed, the machine comes with old/current V5/V5C documents and a Haynes manual. Offered with key Footnotes: All lots are sold 'as is/where is' and Bidders must satisfy themselves as to the provenance, condition, age, completeness and originality prior to bidding.
