FIVE LESLIE FIEDLER TITLES FROM ANNE RICE'S LIBRARY. FIEDLER, LESLIE. 1917-2003. 1. Love and Death in the American Novel. New York: Stein and Day, 1960, 1966. 8vo. Cloth, dust jacket. Revised edition. Shelfwear. SIGNED by Fiedler on the verso of the half-title. With Anne Rice ownership signature, tabs, and annotations throughout. 2. Waiting for the End. New York: Stein and Day, 1964. 8vo. Cloth, dust jacket. SIGNED by Fiedler on the front flyleaf and signed, tabbed and annotated by Rice throughout. 3. The Return of the Vanishing American. New York: Stein and Day, 1968. 8vo. Cloth, dust jacket. Ex-library copy. SIGNED by Fiedler on the title page. 4. What Was Literature? New York: Simon and Schuster, 1982. 8vo. Cloth, dust jacket. Anne Rice ownership signature and annotations throughout. 5. Another copy. With Rice ownership signature and annotations. Leslie Fiedler was arguably the most influential American literary critic of the 20th century, certainly within the discipline of American literature. His Love and Death in the American Novel (1960) was critical in establishing a canon of American literature in academia, and it was Fiedler who first argued that American lit is a literature of sexual suppression—'our literature is a gothic fiction, nonrealistic and negative, sadist and melodramatic, a literature of darkness and the grotesque in a land of light and affirmation.' Because of the American novel's inability to address adult male sexuality, women in the canonical novels are reduced to either 'monsters of virtue or bitchery.' Both Anne and Stan Rice would have read Fiedler during their undergraduate and graduate days. Rice's work takes up Fiedler's challenge, continuing to explore the gothic and grotesque, but instead of avoiding it, she places male sexuality and fluidity at the center of her narrative journey.
