The first title bears Rice's ownership signature to title page ('Anne Rice / May 29, 2012 / The Desert') and is tabbed and annotated throughout. The second title bears her ownership signature on the title page. Elizabeth Gaskell was a popular Victorian novelist and biographer whose most famous titles are North and South, Cranford, and her biography of Charlotte Bronte. Gaskell was a contemporary of Dickens and, like him, wrote long, intricate and socially conscious novels exploring the effects of industrialization on Britain. And like Dickens, Gaskell wrote ghost stories, which she published in the pages of Household Words, Dickens' literary magazine. In this copy of Tales of Mystery... Rice has underscored especially evocative language in the text and made additional notes about extraordinary words to the rear interior cover.
