SCHOOLCRAFT, HENRY ROWE. 1793-1864. Information respecting the History, Condition and Prospects of the Indian Tribes of the United States. Philadelphia: Lippincott, Grambo & Company, 1853-1856. 5 volumes. Imperial 8vo (268 x 195 mm). Engraved vignettes on titles, 270 (of 272?) engraved plates and maps, wood-engraved illustrations in text. 20th-century three-quarter black morocco and pebbled cloth, spines ruled and titled in gilt with 5 raised bands, marbled endpapers, top edges gilt. Slightly rubbed, browning and foxing. Later, small paper edition, complete as published in 5 volumes. Schoolcraft's monumental 'work contains a vast mass of really valuable material. It has indeed performed a very important service for Indian history, in collecting and preserving an immense amount of historic data. Vocabularies of Indian languages, grammatical analyses, legends of various tribes, biographies of chiefs and warriors, narratives of captivities, histories of Indian wars, emigrations, and theories of their origin, are all related and blended in an extraordinary and perplexing manner. A very large number of beautiful steel engravings, representative of some phase of Indian life and customs, are contained in the work, but the most valuable of its illustrations are the drawings of weapons, domestic utensils, instruments of gaming and amusement, sorcery and medicine, objects of worship, their sculptures, paintings, and fortifications, pictograph writing, dwellings, and every form of antiquities, which have been discovered' (Field). 'A cheap edition of the work, printed from the same plates on smaller and thinner paper in imperial octavo size, was also published under the same title and imprint; but it comprises only the first five volumes, 1853--1856....' (Sabin 77855). The table of illustrations in volume V calls for 2 additional plates, not present here. Field 1379; Howes S-183 (comments).
