SZYK, ARTHUR. 1864-1951. Declaration of Independence. Collotype print on card, signed ('Arthur Szyk') at lower left margin, [New Canaan, CT, 1950], image area approximately 31-1/2 x 25-1/2 inches (800 x 650 mm), framed and glazed, some light browning, not examined out of frame. One of the last works Szyk produced, as well as his largest, he unveiled the original in his hometown of New Canaan on July 4, 1950, declaring it belonged in the Library of Congress, where indeed it now resides. From the Library of Congress: 'The drawing's size and scale are rare in Szyk's art, but it contains the same fine detail and miniaturist style as his smaller master works. Szyk became a United States citizen in 1948 and captures the patriotic and ambitious spirit of his adopted country with vignettes from the American Revolution, flags of all the states and territories, and such symbols as the Liberty Bell.' A RARE SIGNED EXAMPLE OF THE ORIGINAL LARGE-SCALE ISSUE OF SZYK'S DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE, and not the reduced second edition commonly seen in the market. The first issue is rare, and we trace no other signed copy at auction. For further information on this lot please visit Bonhams.com For further information about this lot please visit the lot listing
