AUDUBON, JOHN WOODHOUSE. 1812-1862. 'Night Watch,' Pl. 2 from Illustrated Notes of an Expedition through Mexico and California. New York: J.W. Audubon, 1852. Hand-colored lithographed plate after Audubon, on stone by E. Gildemeister, printed by Nagel & Weingaertner, 250 x 324 mm (image), small tear in upper margin, backed with small strip of paper tape. 'Night Watch' from Audubon's excessively rare account of his travels in Mexico and California. Audubon had planned a 10 volume work accompanied by 40 plates, but after publishing the first volume containing four plates, he abandoned the project, creating one of the rarest issues in American color plate printing. Audubon account ledgers for 1852 confirm the sale of only two copies (Kurutz). Howes A-390 ('dd,' 'superlatively rare, almost unobtainable'); Kurutz 21; Reese Color Plate 41; Wagner-Camp 208 (all for the published work).
