Tinted lithographic print, approximately 600 x 970 mm, slight browning to paper, matted and framed, not examined out of frame. Variant edition of this print, lacking most of the text at the lower margin. The winter of 1849/1850 in California saw dramatic rainfall from San Francisco to Sacramento, occurring on the heels of an explosion of population in the area during the Gold Rush. Sacramento experienced over 12 inches of rainfall in December, followed by around 4.5 inches in the first week of January. On January 9th the city's streets were filled with a torrent of muddy water, extending to as much as one mile from the banks of the Sacramento River by the following morning. Huge areas of farmland were inundated, sweeping away livestock and small structures. This and other floods that followed led to the development of a system of channels and levees to protect the city and surrounding areas.
