ROOSEVELT APPOINTS GEORGE CURRY GOVERNOR OF NEW MEXICO. ROOSEVELT, THEODORE. 1858-1919. Typed Letter Signed ('Theodore Roosevelt') to Alfred Henry Lewis on corruption, the Rough Riders, and Bat Masterson, 2 pp, 225 x 183 mm, bifolia typed recto of 1st leaf and verso of 2nd leaf, with Roosevelt's autograph corrections including 5 added words, on The White House letterhead, dated in type Oyster Bay, NY, July 27, 1907, marked 'Personal' in type, lightly soiled at margins. '... as game a man as ever drew a gun, and, I firmly believe, and absolutely straight.' Roosevelt, on George Curry. AN EXCELLENT ROOSEVELT LETTER ON THE APPOINTMENT OF GEORGE CURRY AS GOVERNOR OF NEW MEXICO. Writing to his friend Alfred Henry Lewis, Roosevelt mentions recent corruption in New Mexico, and informs him of the recent appointment of George Curry, ex-Dodge City and Lincoln County lawman who served under Bat Masterson and then as a Rough Rider under Roosevelt himself. Masterson had become a favorite of Roosevelt after Lewis introduced the two men. Here Roosevelt writes to Lewis: ''I made up my mind I would appoint a man who was absolutely straight and yet a real Westerner ... I accordingly appointed George Curry. You can find out all about him from Bat Masterson, as he was one of Bat's deputies in the old days at Dodge City ... He was a captain in my regiment – as game a man as ever drew a gun, and, I firmly believe, an absolutely straight man.' Lewis had received a veiled offer from a group of New Mexico businessmen to come to New Mexico to meet and report on the situation. Instead, he forwarded the letter to Roosevelt, who responded with this letter the same day he received it.
