AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES 1785-1851. Ornithological Biography, or an Account of the Habits of the Birds of the United States of America. Edinburgh: Adam Black; Adam & Charles Black, 1831-1849 (but 1831-1839). 5 volumes. 8vo (270 x 165 mm). Half titles, subscriber lists, prospectus for Birds of America with extracts of reviews bound at the end of volume I, wood-engraved illustrations in text. Contemporary red-brown cloth, rebacked in modern morocco, publisher's spine labels laid down to front paste-downs, many pages uncut. Cloth rubbed, some dampstaining to volumes III and V, scattered browning and foxing, ownership signature on volume I title dated 1896. FIRST EDITION OF AUDUBON'S TEXT FOR THE ELEPHANT FOLIO EDITION OF THE BIRDS OF AMERICA, issued to accompany the portfolio, but published separately and given away to subscribers. Audubon first conceived of the text in 1826, but did not set to work on it until 1830. It was intended to be included with the portfolio, but British copyright laws at the time required nine copies of any published book to be submitted to copyright offices. Audubon avoided the costly prospect of giving away nine sets of his elephant folio engravings by publishing the text volumes separately.
