AUDUBON, JOHN JAMES. 1785-1851. The Birds of America, from Drawings Made in the United States and their Territories. New York & Philadelphia: E.G. Dorsey for J.J. Audubon and [vols I-V] J.B. Chevalier, [1839-]1840-1844. 7 volumes. 8vo (258 x 162 mm). Half-titles and subscribers list present in all volumes. 500 hand-colored lithographic plates after Audubon by W. E. Hitchcock, R. Trembly, and others, printed and colored by J. T Bowen, anatomical woodcut illustrations in text. 19th century half morocco spines in five compartments elaborately gilt, gilt edges. Slight wear to joints and corners. Some occasional staining and offsetting, slight dampstaining to first leaves and plate in vol. 6, lacking 12 tissue guards. Provenance: Carlton P. Richmond (bookplate); W. A. Butterfield Bookseller (note dated Oct. 25, 1924 tipped in volume one). FIRST OCTAVO EDITION, and the first American edition. Following the completion of the double-elephant folio edition, Audubon began work on the octavo version as a more financially lucrative venture. It was the most expansive American color plate book to date, containing 65 images not present in the elephant folio and arranged in a scientific manner. A desirable addition to the shelves of the upper classes, this edition became 'probably the greatest commercial success of any color plate book issued in 19th-century America' (Reese). Ayer/Zimmer, p 22; Nissen IVB 51; Reese, American Color Plates Books 34; Sabin 2364.
