PONTING (HERBERT G.) and others Collection of 87 direct positive glass lantern lecture slides relating to Scott's ill-fated Terra Nova expedition, mostly captioned below the image in white ink and inscribed 'Copyright P. Popper' above in white ink, the slides numbered 1-59 and 61-88 on small labels in lower corners and with small 'Newton & Co., 72 Wigmore Street' labels in upper corners, preserved in wooden box, each slide 81 x 81mm., [c.1935-1941]; together with a box containing 71 larger format slides, numbered on small labels, without captions, 6 cracked, each 82 x 100mm. (2) Footnotes: 'We shall have a cinematograph and photographic record that will be absolutely new in expeditionary work' (Robert F. Scott's journal). The majority of the slides are from photographs taken by Herbert G. Ponting on the British Antarctic Expedition 1910-1913 and were produced largely for lecture tours in the following years. When Ponting died penniless in 1935, his collection of glass plates and the copyright were bought by Paul Popper. The present set was presumably made by Newton & Co. between then and 1941, when the 72 Wigmore Sreet address was no longer registered to Newton. The many scenes include portraits of members of the expedition engaged in tasks, at rest or posed singly or in groups, images of the Terra Nova at sea and in the ice, sledging journeys and encampments, landscapes, and animals including ponies, penguins and seals, together with a few book and map illustrations.
