In the background is an iceberg floating in the sea. 'A good illustration of a tabular berg newly 'calved' away from the Great Ice Barrier [...] The berg is about a hundred feet high, and as only about the eighth part is visible above water there are some seven hundred feet of ice below the surface.' Named after Charles Royds (1876-1931), the meteorologist on the Discovery expedition (1901-04), Cape Royds is the point on Ross Island where Shackleton's team had built their hut in 1908. The Fine Art Society mounted the first public exhibition of Ponting's photographs at their gallery in New Bond Street, London on 4 December 1913, displaying 146 images, and generating some 680 orders. They were available in four sizes, the present example being the largest exhibition format. This was number 117.
