OATES (LAWRENCE 'TITUS') Autograph letter signed ('LEG Oates'), to his mother ('Dear Mother'), thanking her for her letter ('...which Herbert brought down with him to the ship...'), describing the house he is staying in ('...most charming...') and recounting an amusing story about one of the children who asked '...if I was a pirate she was quite disappointed when she heard I was not...', thanking her for the present of some teeth ('...a most suitable present as I shall be able to have them with me whereas most of my other things will have to be dumped...'), and anticipating his departure ('...It is not decided yet which way I go out to New Zealand but I expect it will be Siberia I don't mind which way it is but I should like to know one way or the other... I go back to the ship Monday afternoon...'), 4 pages on a bifolium, light dust-staining and smudging, creased at fold, 8vo (175 x 112mm.), Moynes Court, Chepstow, 10 June [19]10 Footnotes: 'I GO BACK TO THE SHIP MONDAY AFTERNOON': 'TITUS' OATES WRITES TO HIS MOTHER PRIOR TO HIS DEPARTURE FOR SCOTT'S LAST EXPEDITION. In this rare letter from Scott's doomed companion, Oates expresses his frustration at the lack of information as he awaits instructions for his departure ('...I should like to know one way or the other...'), revealing perhaps a glimpse of the personality that would cause Scott to describe him as a '...cheery old pessimist...'. Oates' service as an officer in the Second Boer War, for which he was mentioned in despatches, and his skill with horses (together with a contribution of £1,000 to expedition funds) earned him a place on Scott's Terra Nova expedition. His job was to look after the nineteen ponies used for sledge hauling during the first half of the expedition, and was of course one of the five-man party accompanying Scott on his last push to the Pole. Despite his complaints in our letter ('...from Tuesday until Friday I am rather at a loose end...'), Oates left on the Terra Nova from Cardiff five days after writing to his mother on 15 June. The young girl who made what Oates called a '...faux pas...' when he arrived could well have been Mary Herbert (1903-1983), the daughter of Brigadier General Edmund Herbert of Moynes Court, who later became a British SOE agent during World War II.
