ROYDS (CHARLES) Autograph letter signed ('Charlie Royds'), to Admiral Markham ('Dear Admiral Markham'), giving a report on the performance of the Discovery ('...an excellent sea boat... She certainly rolls heavily, and our skid beams gave us rather anxious moments... luckily only one bracket broke at a time, & we had it well secured...'), the crew ('...they work well & willingly... Unfortunately drink was thrust upon our men on arriving & we had some trouble... [but] have settled down to the harbour work of refitting...'), and his opinion of Captain Scott ('...at times a little hasty, & wants several things done at once, but in all, is excellent... trusted & respected by all...'), commenting on the lack of space for stores ('...heavens only knows where it is all going...'), dismissing reports in the papers of a leak and confident that they are '...very ready to go through fire, ice, water or anything else we may encounter...', on Discovery Antarctic Expedition headed notepaper, with autograph envelope, four pages on a bifolium, dust-staining, creased at fold, 8vo (175 x 114mm.), Lyttleton, New Zealand, 10 December [19]01 Footnotes: 'AT TIMES A LITTLE HASTY & WANTS SEVERAL THINGS DONE AT ONCE': CHARLES ROYDS ON CAPTAIN SCOTT & THE FIRST VOYAGE OF THE DISCOVERY. Charles Royds (1876-1931) served as first lieutenant of the Discovery on Robert Falcon Scott's National Antarctic Expedition, which also included Ernest Shackleton, from 1901 to 1904. Here he sends a progress report to Clements Markham, president of the Royal Geographical Society and instigator of the expedition, commenting on both on the ship and its crew, including Scott himself. His view echoes some of the criticisms laid on Scott after he was narrowly beaten to the Pole by Amundsen in 1912, but he is keen to note that Scott was indeed 'excellent' and had gained the trust and respect of his men. There is much on the suitability of the Discovery for the task ahead. As she set sail for New Zealand only a week after leaving the shipyard in Dundee, the long voyage was therefore her sea trial, an opportunity to test her equipment and seaworthiness. Royds refers to a leak which sprung on the way from Dundee to London, which gained the attention of the press, but dismisses it as '... what you might... expect in a new wooden ship...'. Both Scott and Shackleton commented on her stability and whilst Royds admits she '...certainly rolls heavily...', he deemed her construction, which was designed with a multi-layered hull specifically to withstand damage from ice-floes or crushing, up to the task ahead. After repairs in dry dock at Lyttleton, the Discovery left for the Antarctic on 21 December 1901.
