STONE (BERNARD J.) Autograph letter signed ('Bern... Antarctic Explorer 'I don't think so''), to his cousin Herbert Petley of Buckland ('Dear Herb'), writing from the Terra Nova, '...I suppose you have read the news of the loss of all the southern party. It was very hard lines to succeed so far only to die 11 miles from safety but of course men cannot control the weather if we could we should have a better time down here...', reporting that even though it is summer it is 5 below freezing ('...you can guess what its like in mid winter we don't want many ice creams...'), continuing to talk about the weather and his attempts to learn to ski ('...they had to dig me out every few yards...'), now on his way home and urging him to '...save this stamp as they are very scarce & makes a good curio...', on British Antarctic Expedition Terra Nova notepaper with penguin device; with autograph envelope, New Zealand 1d overstamped 'Victoria Land' affixed, BAE frank, four pages on a bifolium, light dust-staining, creased at fold, 8vo (202 x 125mm.), 'S.Y. Terra Nova, Antarctic', 24 January [19]13 (2) Footnotes: 'VERY HARD LINES TO SUCCEED SO FAR ONLY TO DIE 11 MILES FROM SAFETY': THE TERRA NOVA'S STOKER WRITES FROM THE ANTARCTIC CONFIRMING NEWS OF CAPTAIN SCOTT'S DEATH. Whilst much attention is paid to the leading members of the exploration parties and their achievements, none of it would have been possible without the professional sailors on board the Terra Nova. At times amusing, at others stoic, our letter is a rare glimpse into experiences of an ordinary sailor, Bernard J. Stone, Leading Stoker, R.N., who accompanied the expedition and faced the same harsh conditions as his better-known counterparts: '...We have just got over a nine day blizzard talk about snow. England is nowhere in it...' he writes. A few days before this letter, the Terra Nova had returned to Cape Evans to close up the hut and leave provisions for subsequent expeditions. By 10 February, the ship was back in Oamaru, from whence news of Scott's death and that of his companions was wired to London and the world.
