SCOTT (ROBERT FALCON) Typed letter signed ('R Scott') to B.H. Keall of Kirton Grammar School, near Boston, thanking him for the donation from the boys towards the British Antarctic Expedition of 1910 ('...With our most sincere gratitude for your patriotic support and kind wishes for the success of the expedition...'), with additional autograph note signed with initials ('Please tell the contributors that – I greatly appreciate the spirit with which they have supported the expedition/ R.S.'), on British Antarctic Expedition 1910 notepaper, one page, dust-staining, foxing and marks, rust-stains from old staple lower left, small area of loss to right hand edge not affecting text, 4to (255 x 202mm.), Victoria Street, 19 February 1910; with receipt for seven shillings signed ('R Scott'), stapled to upper left corner of accompanying letter, oval Expedition receipt stamp in purple ink, one page, printed with manuscript insertions, oblong 8vo (102 x 180mm.) (2) Footnotes: 'I GREATLY APPRECIATE THE SPIRIT WITH WHICH THEY HAVE SUPPORTED THE EXPEDITION': Scott thanks a group of schoolboys for their small contribution to expedition funds and recognises the spirit in which it was given. When Scott was raising funds for what was to be his last expedition, he had already achieved fame as an Antarctic explorer, and this new venture captured the imagination of the country. As attested to in a letter from his wife Kathleen (see adjacent lot), his goal was to raise £40,000, and he resigned as Naval Assistant to the Second Sea Lord in 1909 in order to concentrate on the task. Money was raised from the British, New Zealand and Australian governments, wealthy private individuals and the general public, ranging from donations of thousands of pounds from businessmen, down to the shillings gathered by excited schoolboys. In addition, certain places on the expedition were sold – Oates and Cherry-Garrard for example both paid £1,000 to join.
