Admiral John Byron: A rare pearlware bowl, circa 1770-80 The interior inscribed in blue 'Success to Admiral Byron' above a flourish, a simple loop border below the internal rim, the exterior painted with Chinese islands, 18.2cm diam Footnotes: Provenance With Garry Atkins John Byron commanded a squadron during the Seven years' War. He held the office of governor of Newfoundland between 1769 and 1772 and was made Vice Admiral of the white in 1780. As a young midshipman John Byron accompanied George Anson on his voyage around the world. In 1768 he published a popular narrative of this voyage and the tale of his survival at the wreckage of HMS Wager off the Chilean coast in 1741. Byron was sometimes nicknamed 'Foul-Weather Jack' due to his frequent encounters with bad weather at sea. The poet George Gordon Byron (Lord Byron), was inspired by his grandfather's account when he wrote Don Juan.
