Duncan and Camperdown: Two rare creamware mugs, circa 1800 One printed in brown and hand-coloured with a titled portrait of 'Admiral Lord Viscount Duncan, Who defeated the Dutch Fleet Octr 11th 1797, God Save The King - Huzza!!!', the print indistinctly signed below the banner, 12.2cm high, the second mug printed in black with the aftermath of Camperdown, Duncan's ship Venerable towing the captured Dutch flagship, De Winter's Vryheid, a verse underneath reading 'Vain are the Boasts of Belgicks sons...When faced by British ships & guns...Tho de Winter does in Autumn Come...Brave DUNCAN brings his harvest home', 12.4cm high (2) Footnotes: Camperdown was not only an important tactical victory but served as crucial positive news in the wake of the recent Spithead and Nore mutinies. Indeed, on his way to greet Duncan on his return from battle, King George III gave Royal pardon to a number of men awaiting punishment for their role in the Nore mutiny, an attempt to turn the tide. The bravery and success of the fleet at Camperdown and individual stories of heroism such as that of Jack Crawford were used as propaganda for the Navy. Drakard suggests that the tiny, indistinct signature beneath the portrait is purposeful, to mask the plagiarism of a contemporary print by John Aynsley of Lane End.
