Two Prattware plaques of naval heroes, circa 1790-1800 Each with a bust-length portrait of an admiral wearing the garter star on the breast of his jacket, the larger oval example moulded with war trophies, scrolled detail applied to the oval frame, 21.2cm high, the circular plaque with an inner border of laurel leaves topped with a further garter star on a pounced ground, 13cm diam, both pierced for suspension and picked out in pratt colours (2) Footnotes: Without titles the identification of these portraits is far from straightforward. Indeed, this may have been the intention of the potter, an ambiguous naval commander perhaps easier to market as each public figure's popularity waxed and waned. A plaque very similar to the larger example is in the National Maritime Museum at Greenwich, perhaps optimistically identified as Admiral Lord Keppel having been donated by Colin Keppel, a relation of the Admiral who purchased the plaque at Sotheby's in 1934. John and Griselda Lewis suggest the smaller plaque depicts Admiral Lord Howe, see Pratt Ware (1984), p.150. However, it seems Admiral Lord Duncan is a possible sitter, taking hairstyle and date into consideration. The figure's one-eyed appearance could even be an attempt at suggesting Nelson himself.
