Three creamware cheese plates from the 'Baltic Set Dinner Service', circa 1802 Enamelled with a border of fruiting oak leaves reserving panels inscribed 'Nelson', above blue ribbons inscribed 'the Glorious 1st of August' and 'the San Josef', the cavetto titled 'Aboukir' and '14th Feby', the centre with a fouled anchor, 'Nelson, 2nd April, Baltic', enclosed by a laurel wreath, 18.7cm diam (3) Footnotes: Provenance Probably Vice-Admiral Horatio, Lord Nelson Probably Emma, Lady Hamilton The inventories of Emma, Lady Hamilton's possessions, drawn up following Nelson's death and during her financial difficulties, list three distinct sets made for Nelson with a border of oak leaves. The 'Nelson set' was a dessert service of Paris porcelain and a tea service of Coalport, all decorated with Nelson's arms. See lot 12 in this sale for a breakfast cup and saucer from the latter. The 'Baltic Set' was a tea service and a dessert set both of Paris porcelain, together with a dinner set which was creamware. In the Merton or Trickey inventory, of circa 1813, Nelson's creamware dinner service lists plates for soup, dinner and dessert courses as well as '10 cheese plates.' These are the smaller plates which are often described as side plates. These will have been used alongside the two Cheese Trays that were also listed. One of these cheese trays was sold by Bonhams on 23 April 2024, lot 68.
